The department has the following objectives:

• Accurate and comprehensive data collection

Over the past few years, we have performed a complete range of GI procedures including:

• Upper GI Transhiatal Oesophagectomy, Gastrectomy
• Colorectal Mesorectal excisions, Pouch procedures for Ulcerative Colitis, Sphincter saving operations for rectal cancer, Obscure GI bleeding
• Liver Transplantation, Resection, Radiofrequency ablation, Transarterial chemoembolisation, Portosystemic shunt
• GB/ bile duct Radical cholecystectomy, Hepatectomy
• Pancreas PDR, Necrosectomy
• More than 140 liver resections performed
• Mortality 1/101(0.9%) in low risk patients
• Mortality 9/39 (23%) in high risk groups e.g. cirrhosis, high jaundice
• Cost of liver resection at SGRH - Rs. 150,000/- approx.

Gall bladder cancer: More than 125 resections have been performed

Bile duct: Over 200 patients with cancer of bile ducts or bile duct injury following surgery for gall bladder stones have been successfully managed
